When I founded ALNA Envelope Company, Inc. more than 50 years ago, I never had time to envision that the company would grow to the size it is today. I was too busy making sure we met the needs of our clients so they could meet the the needs of their customers. When visitors to our modern plant see our 12 jet presses and other modern equipment working at full speed, they often ask: "How many field sales representatives do you employ? " The answer today is the same as it has been since the first envelope passed through our first Multi - "None." Our customers are our outside sales reps. That's the way it's always been; that's the way it will always be. The concept of letting trade people do the selling and us do the printing grew out of my personal sales experience. In the early 1950's, I was a printing and envelope broker. I had to work very hard to get new accounts. Usually, I offered a special low price to get the first order. However, I soon discovered that keeping accounts was a major problem because of poor service from my suppliers. I would have doubled my sales if I could have spent more time calling on my accounts instead of waiting for quotations or calling the suppliers about late deliveries. Since those early days of 5,000-per-hour duplicators, we've invested in jet presses that produce an amazing 60,000 pieces per hour. We've recruited a larger production and support staff. ALNA's growth has been phenomenal, but never do we lose sight of the needs of our thousands of customers. We still deliver orders in one, two, or three days without impairing the quality of the our products. One of the key ingredients in ALNA's unique track record is teamwork and a policy of promoting to higher positions our young, professional personnel.
